The National Vizsla Association National Quail
Classic was held on the Union County Bird Dog Ranch south and west of
Thayer, Iowa. Ten dogs competed for the winner's circle. The winner and
runner-up of the event were braced together. The winner being Hawk's
Pappomatic (Ochs)and the Runner-Up being named Jazzmin (Tomczak). Pappy
began the brace with a strong and forward but irregular pattern. At 10,
Ochs elected to water early going into a known pheasant hideout. At 20,
Pappy was found standing with all in order on a large covey. At 25,
Pappy encountered a running pheasant and the bird flushed wild downwind
with all in order. At 32, Pappy again located a covey and handled the
find with the style and enthusiasm typical of a high, class bird dog. At
43, Pappy located a large covey while going down a feed strip. The covey
was scattered and the gallery was given the opportunity to see
approximately 15 birds rise. Ochs rode hard to get there and was
rewarded by finding Pappy standing tall. Ochs elected to flush instead
of taking the stop to flush and another covey rise of about 15 birds
ensued. At 50, Pappy and bracemate were working game in the same area.
The other handler elected to continue working game while Ochs collared
Pappy and took him on. Pappy finished strong and forward. |
